Dreams of the post season quickly dwindle

If the Jays had any chance of the wild card, it ended this past weekend when they lost two out of three against the Wild Card leading Boston Red Sox.  The Jays went into the series only seven games back of the Red Sox.  Unfortunately, they lost Friday night 8-4.   Thus, making them eight games behind Boston.  On Saturday they bounced back and completely annihilated the Red Sox 11-0!  It was the 3rd time in less than a week that the Jays scored more than eleven runs (two against the Sox).   They were now back to where they started, seven games behind Boston.   Sunday’s game was pretty much a make or break game.  If they won, their six games behind.  If they lost, they were back to eight games.  Well as we know, they fell to the Red Sox 6-5 in eleven innings.  Brandon League gave up a home run to Lowrie in the 11th.  So now they are eight games behind Boston with 32 games left and three teams ahead of them in the Wild Card race.  Here are the standings:

This could’ve been a lot different if Toronto would’ve swept the Boston series.  If Toronto would’ve won all three, they would be only five games behind.  Here is what it would have looked like had they swept.

Wow!  What a difference two wins make!   Minnesota would be in first and the Jays would only be five back.  But, that is the beauty of baseball.  It is a game of what “if’s” and “how it could’ve been”.   Maybe the Jays should start looking towards next season.  I still think the Jays should trade (or put on the waiver wire) a few players and let some rookies play.  A few examples would be David Eckstein and John McDonald.  Both are shortstops and Riccardi has acknowledged that he would like to upgrade that position.  Eckstein for obvious reasons as apparently Cito Gaston has something against the little man.  John McDonald would probably give you a ‘B’ prospect.

In other news, the Blue Jays acquired Jose Bautista (Bautista, J, click on this to display Bautista’s stats) from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday for a player to be named later.  That player was announced today.  It is Catcher Robinson Diaz.  I find this a little odd because Bautista was banished to the minors by Pittsburgh and Diaz was suppose to be one of the higher rated prospects of the Blue Jays.  At the beginning of the season Diaz was ranked first ahead of Curtis Thigpen in the Catcher position.   Unfortunately he did not have a good season as it was limited because of an ankle injury.  The surprising thing about Jose Bautista is that his 12 home runs would be tied for the team lead on the Blue Jays.   Riccardi acquired him because he knows that Rolen will probably never play a full season again and they need a quality back up third baseman.  Bautista can also play the outfield.

On Tuesday the Blue Jays travel to Tampa Bay to play the Rays.  Perhaps the Jays will sweep and everyone will think they have a chance to win the division.  Think again.

Thanks for reading and bye for now.

Blue Jays dump the Red Sox into the Laundry

The Blue Jays threw the Dirty Red Sox in the laundry this weekend with a two game sweep.  It was supposed to be a three game series, but Friday’s game was post-poned due to rain.  They will play that game in a day-night double header in September.

This past weekend, the Blue Jays defeated the Sox with pitching and hitting.   Saturday saw the ‘Doc’ pitch his eighth complete game of the season with a 4-1 win.   The only run against Halladay was a home run in the ninth.  Alex Rios and Adam Lind hit home runs.

Today’s game (Sunday) was all hitting!  The Toronto Blue Jays destroyed the Sox by a score of 15-4!  This all happened against their staff ace Josh Beckett.  He lasted only two and a third innings.  Here is a synopsis of the game:

·        The Blue Jays scored in every inning except the 2nd and the 9th

·        Blue Jays had a total of 12 extra base hits.  With 10 of them being doubles. (1 triple (Wilkerson), 1 home run (Lind))

·        Every Jay except number nine hitter John McDonald had come to the plate six times.

·        Every Jay had a hit except Rod Barajas (0-4 with a hit by pitch and one walk)

·        Rod Barajas scored twice without getting a hit.

·        Brad Wilkerson was the only Jay not to score a run

·        Wilkerson did have a triple

·        Alex Rios went 5-6 with four doubles (almost five) tying a club record with Damaso Garcia and Shannon Stewart

·        Seven Jays had RBI’s with only Barajas and Scutaro being held without one

·        Twelve different pitchers were used by both teams.

·        Only two of those pitchers had zero runs scored on them (League for the Jays and Pappelbon for the Red Sox)

·        Eleven men were left on base by the Jays

·        J.D. Drew of Boston left the game after the third with tightness in his back.

·        Both teams had a player needing only one more hit for the cycle.  Adam Lind who needed a triple and Chad Lowrie who needed a home run for the Sox.

·        Surprisingly, the Red Sox had more home runs (two)

·        Toronto had a hit in every inning except for the ninth

All in all it was a great weekend for the Blue Jays.   On Tuesday, the Yankees come to town for a three gamer.  Than it’s the Red Sox again, for a three game weekend series.

In other baseball news, Reed Johnson did it again for the Cubbies.  Reed hit a bases clearing double with the bases loaded in the 7th inning to help the Cubs score eight in that same inning.  He actually had a single as well in that inning!  Johnson was only 4-5 with 3 RBI’s.  Way to go Riccardi.  Do you still believe that he wasn’t good enough for your offensively rich (sarcasm) team?

Thanks for reading and bye for now.
