Francona Fumbles
Today, Terry Francona (who is the American League All-Star Manager) selected Indians Cliff Lee to be the starting pitcher over Doc Halladay. What an injustice! Roy Halladay was clearly the consensus pick among more than some people. I read blogs from ESPN and MLB.Com stating that Halladay should be the starter. I admit that Lee is having a great season. But has he done it before? Anyone remember Jack Armstrong from the 1990 All-Star game? Exactly. No one will remember Lee in eighteen years either. But they will remember Roy ‘Doc’ Halladay.

I heard someone say that Roy Halladay should start because of his past and his complete dominance of the American League. I completely agree. The numbers between Doc and Cliff Lee are very close. But I think Halladay should’ve received the start because of 2005. That year, Doc was set to start the All-Star game when he broke his leg in the final start before the game. It’s taken him until this year to fully recover, even though his past two years have been remarkably great.
On another note, Canadian Justin Morneau is in the Home Run Derby tonight. Let’s hope he does better than what Jason Bay did a couple of years ago. He hit zero.
I respect Terry Francona a lot, but I am disappointed in his selection of Cliff Lee.
Thanks for reading and bye for now.
No ‘Halladay’ for Yankees Hitters
Last night Roy ‘Doc’ Halladay put on a clinic. A clinic on how to shut down a highly potent offense called the New York Yankees! A-Rod and the boys collected a total of two hits in a 5-0 loss to the Blue Jays. Doc needed 113 pitches (and ten of those were against Bobby Abreu in the ninth) to get the complete game, shut-out.
Here is his line for the night:
| Toronto | IP | H | R | ER | BB | SO | HR | ERA |
| Halladay (W, 11-6) | 9.0 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 8 | 0 | 2.71 |
The game actually didn’t start off to well. Halladay hit the lead-off hitter Gardner, who than stole second base. It could’ve possibly been a no-hitter as Rodriguez’s single to center would’ve been caught if Wells or Rios were playing. Nothing against Wilkerson, but he is not a gold glover. After that, Doc’s other blemish until the ninth (if you call it that) was when he walked the slumping Robinson Cano. Derek Jeter got a one out double in the ninth. The following batter was Abreu who fouled off at least nine pitches before he swung at a nasty curve ball and missed. A-Rod than lined out to Overbay to finish the game.
Toronto has now won four in a row and they seem to be hitting better in key situations. I thought for sure that our offense would struggle last night because of the absence of Wells and Rios. In case you don’t know, Vernon Wells was placed on the disabled list with a strained hamstring and will be out 4-6 weeks. The Jays will be without Alex Rios this weekend as he is in Puerto Rico with his girlfriend and their new born baby. The Jays recalled Kevin Mench to take Well’s spot.
‘Doc’ is a nominee to start the All-Star game on Tuesday. It is between him and Cliff Lee. Here is how they match up:

Halladay is currently 1st in complete games as well as innings pitched. Cliff Lee is leading in ERA, marginally though. Doc also has an unprecedented seven complete games. Wow! Both pitchers have outstanding WHIP’s (Walks/Hits per Innings Pitched), Halladay’s is one and Lee’s is 1.03. Roy Halladay also has thrown twenty two innings more and if it were not for Toronto’s dismal offense, he would surely be 15-2.
But Lee will probably start the All-Star game because just like Sunday Night Baseball, the Blue Jays get ignored because their Canadian. Shame on ESPN and shame on Major League Baseball if Halladay is not starting.
