Rockin’ Romero?/Ignorant to Inglett

The battle for the final two starting spots is now over.  Canadian Scotty Richmond & former 1st RDP Ricky Romero made the cut.  Brad Mills (who was the final cut) lost out and has been sent to minor league camp.  He will eventually end up in ‘AAA’.  Likewise for Raul Chavez, who was battling Michael Barrett for the back up catchers spot.

It was nice to see Richmond make the starting five, given his story on how he made it to the ‘bigs’.  Ricky Romero’s road is a little different.  He is a former 1st RDP who struggled (mainly because of injuries) the past few years.  Is he ready for the majors?  Gaston & Riccardi think so.  I for one am a little skeptical.  As I have mentioned in previous blogs, I’m not a big fan of this guy.  I think Romero made the team because of the lack of quality starters in the Jays system and will probably lose his spot once Janssen and/or McGowan come back.  Time will tell.

But, perhaps he will prove me wrong.

In other Jays news, the versatile Joey Inglett was assigned to ‘AAA’.  I am a little perplexed by this move, because I think he performed well last season in an utility role.  I personally, would’ve had him on my team, no doubt.  Now looking at the roster, you can almost understand why the Jays demoted him.  The Jays have McDonald & Bautista on the bench.  Johnny Mac can play SS, 2B & 3B.  Jose Bautista can play third and second.  The problem I have is that McDonald is not versatile enough.  What I mean is that he is a whiz on defense, but he can’t hit.  Inglett does alright on the field & he is a left handed hitter, who hits righties really well.  Both can be used as pinch runners, but I personally would’ve gone with Inglett.  Marco Scutaro(who is the starting short stop) can hold his own at that position.  He also can play many positions.  Nothing against McDonald, but I think Inglett would’ve been a better fit on this team.

This is almost déjà vu from last season.  Anyone remember Reed Johnson?

Thanks for reading and bye for now.

Blue Jays dump the Red Sox into the Laundry

The Blue Jays threw the Dirty Red Sox in the laundry this weekend with a two game sweep.  It was supposed to be a three game series, but Friday’s game was post-poned due to rain.  They will play that game in a day-night double header in September.

This past weekend, the Blue Jays defeated the Sox with pitching and hitting.   Saturday saw the ‘Doc’ pitch his eighth complete game of the season with a 4-1 win.   The only run against Halladay was a home run in the ninth.  Alex Rios and Adam Lind hit home runs.

Today’s game (Sunday) was all hitting!  The Toronto Blue Jays destroyed the Sox by a score of 15-4!  This all happened against their staff ace Josh Beckett.  He lasted only two and a third innings.  Here is a synopsis of the game:

·        The Blue Jays scored in every inning except the 2nd and the 9th

·        Blue Jays had a total of 12 extra base hits.  With 10 of them being doubles. (1 triple (Wilkerson), 1 home run (Lind))

·        Every Jay except number nine hitter John McDonald had come to the plate six times.

·        Every Jay had a hit except Rod Barajas (0-4 with a hit by pitch and one walk)

·        Rod Barajas scored twice without getting a hit.

·        Brad Wilkerson was the only Jay not to score a run

·        Wilkerson did have a triple

·        Alex Rios went 5-6 with four doubles (almost five) tying a club record with Damaso Garcia and Shannon Stewart

·        Seven Jays had RBI’s with only Barajas and Scutaro being held without one

·        Twelve different pitchers were used by both teams.

·        Only two of those pitchers had zero runs scored on them (League for the Jays and Pappelbon for the Red Sox)

·        Eleven men were left on base by the Jays

·        J.D. Drew of Boston left the game after the third with tightness in his back.

·        Both teams had a player needing only one more hit for the cycle.  Adam Lind who needed a triple and Chad Lowrie who needed a home run for the Sox.

·        Surprisingly, the Red Sox had more home runs (two)

·        Toronto had a hit in every inning except for the ninth

All in all it was a great weekend for the Blue Jays.   On Tuesday, the Yankees come to town for a three gamer.  Than it’s the Red Sox again, for a three game weekend series.

In other baseball news, Reed Johnson did it again for the Cubbies.  Reed hit a bases clearing double with the bases loaded in the 7th inning to help the Cubs score eight in that same inning.  He actually had a single as well in that inning!  Johnson was only 4-5 with 3 RBI’s.  Way to go Riccardi.  Do you still believe that he wasn’t good enough for your offensively rich (sarcasm) team?

Thanks for reading and bye for now.

Highs ….. and Lows…..

The Jays were on a roll coming into this past weekend series against Cleveland.  Well, not anymore.  Our inconsistent Blue Jays did it again.  They lost all three games against Cleveland.  The Jays are now 59-59 and are eight games back in the wild card race.  What happened in the past seven days, is the synopsis for the season.  They win a few in a row and than lose a few in a row.   Today they travel to Detroit for their only visit this season.  It is a four game series.

In other news, Vernon Wells was activated on Sunday and Kevin Mench was optioned to Syracuse.   Wells was the designated hitter last night and is starting in Centre field tonight.  The funny thing about Mench was that he never actually left Toronto.  Later that day the Blue Jays placed Scott Rolen on the DL, so Mench got to stay in the ‘bigs’.

Another story out of Blue Jay land is the release of Shannon Stewart.  How interesting is that?  First, J.P. signs Reed Johnson (yes, I’m bringing him up again) to a two year contract.  Than, he signs Shannon Stewart to a minor league deal.  At the end of Spring Training, Riccardi decides to release Johnson and keep Stewart.  He said that Stewart would platoon with another defense stalwart (sarcasm), Matty Stairs.  All Reed has done in Chicago, is become a fan favourite and been on a few highlight reels.  Riccardi says that he still does not regret that decision.  Maybe he should revisit that one more time.

The statistics don’t lie.  Let’s not forget that Reed was on the DL as well.   Johnson’s 41 RBI’s would have had him tied with Scutaro for fourth on the team.  I don’t know if that’s a compliment to Reed, or an insult to the Jays.   Alex Rios currently leads the team with a measley 49 RBI’s (going into tonights game).

At this precise time, the Blue Jays are leading the Tigers 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth.  Let’s hope we can hold and get a win for Shawn Marcum.

Thanks for reading and bye for now.
