No ‘Halladay’ for Jays Fans Today
Today has been a day of fear & nervousness for Blue Jays fans as news that Roy Halladay may be traded have surfaced. According to a report from Ken Rosenthal, Jays G.M. J.P. Riccardi acknowledge that they were listening to offers for the Doctor. J.P. was on the radio station FAN 590 this morning & stated that he would listen to offers, but not necessarily trade him. My first reaction and probably the same for all other Jay’s fans was ‘no way, as Doc is the Toronto Blue Jays’. But maybe Riccardi is right. Why not listen to the offers? Personally, it would have to be a ‘blow me out of the water’ type of offer to part with Doc. I would want at least one ready for primetime player and four prospects. Three out of the four would have to be the other organizations top players. Naturally, there would have to be at least two pitchers involved in this trade. That might seem like a lot, but this is the best pitcher in baseball. He is also a bargain at twelve million a year!

There are roughly three weeks left before the trade deadline. The Jays play division rivals, the Rays & Orioles before next Tuesday’s All-Star game. These two series will probably tell us if these trade rumours persist or flame out. Perhaps the Jays could rid themselves of the disappointments named Ryan, Wells & Rios instead.
Stay tuned.

Mr. Consistency — The Best Pitcher in Baseball
Today, ‘Doc’ Halladay goes for his 14th win of the season against the Cleveland Indians. Halladay is the model of consistency. In his 23 starts, only once has he gone less than six innings. Including seven complete games (it could’ve been eight, if it wasn’t for the home run in the eighth last Monday). ‘Doc’s ERA over his last ten starts is 2.35. See the chart below:

Not only has Halladay been hot, but so have the Jays. They swept the A’s this past week and are now 59-57 (as of August 8th). The Jays are now only seven games behind the Red Sox for the Wild Card with four teams ahead of them. Apparently they still have an outside chance, but highly unlikely. Too bad they didn’t start winning a couple of weeks earlier. August will determine the Jays season as we play the Yankees and Red Sox six times each and the surprisingly Rays three times.
Some good news for the Jays is that Vernon Wells is expected to be activated from the DL on Monday. This will be a huge boost for the Jays as they need a number four hitter. Nothing against Overbay, but he is not a clean up hitter. Either is Vernon in my opinion, but he’s the best they’ve got.
So hopefully the Jays can win two this weekend (as we fell to the Indians last night) and go into Detroit four games over .500.

Trade Deadline a snoooozze for Blue Jays
As expected, Riccardi and the Jays did nothing at the deadline this afternoon. I for one, am disapointed. Especially the Burnett thing. I heard on the radio today regarding that perhaps Godfrey and Riccardi did not trade Burnett or other veterans because they are hoping to finish the season on a high and therefore keep their jobs. If this is the case, than I am really disapointed and disturbed. If they want to keep their jobs, than they should’ve traded some players for some prospects. Having said that, they need not worry as most teams ‘stood pat’ at the deadline. There was some big trades today, but overall, very few. Jason Bay, Manny Ramirez and four prospects switched teams in a three team trade. Bay going to Boston, Ramirez to the Dodgers and four minor leaguers going to Pittsburgh. Interesting. To bad the Jays couldn’t get in on that and acquire Bay’s services. The only other highlight of the day was Griffey being traded to the White Sox for two players. I am posting this at 6:30, so hopefully some more trades get announced (even though the deadline expired at 4, sometimes it takes a hour or two to process).
Now there is always the waiver trades of August to get excited about. I guess.

Jays versus Rays as the deadline looms……
Tonight the Blue Jays square off against the Tampa Bay Rays at the Rogers Centre. It is the first of a three game series. Wednesday’s game will be an afternoon tilt. Let’s hope the boys can keep the momentum going after winning five of the last six as this series will definitely decide their fate. If they get swept, than the Jays should start looking towards next year.
On a happier note, Alex Rios has been playing a lot better lately. Especially on Saturday when he hit two home runs and had three RBI’s. The Jays are now above .500 (53-52) and are 7.5 games behind the Wild Card. That doesn’t seem all that bad, except that there are six teams ahead of them for the wild card. So unfortunately, I think they are finished. If healthy, I could see them making a run for it. But, they have injuries. Some of the players missing are Vernon Wells, Aaron Hill, Dustin McGowan, Casey Janssen, and Jeremy Accardo. Also, Scott Rolen, B.J. Ryan and Shaun Marcum have all spent time on the DL. Well, it just makes even a tougher hill to climb.
So the question to ask yourself is this: Should the Jays start trading some of their players? Riccardi says “no” as he likes this team and does not want to dismantle it. But how good is it, really? Will they be better next year (if healthy) with the same roster as this year? I don’t think so. Who’s to say that Vernon Wells becomes the same player as a few years ago? Maybe the constant injuries that he has endured over the past couple of seasons have worn him down. Maybe Vernon will never be a number four hitter, which the Jays are badly lacking. How about Alex Rios? Is this year a fluke, or will he remain inconsistent and be forever an underachiever? Plus, Burnett is more than likely leaving after this season and who knows if Dustin McGowan will be the same pitcher when he comes back from rotator cuff surgery.
I say trade them now (not Wells or Rios). One name that I heard mentioned was B.J. Ryan. That is an interesting name, as many teams could really use a ‘sure thing’ like Ryan. I personally think that it would be a bad idea. If the Jays want to compete next year, they will need a perennial closer. And that closer is B.J. Ryan. I personally think they should trade Matty Stairs, David Eckstein and perhaps Brian Tallett. Heck, even Greg Zaun. Plenty of teams would like him on their bench. Another name could be Scott Rolen.
Now I know this sounds a little negative and I hope that the Jays do play better this year. I also know that Toronto is not as bad as myself and others are implying. They are just above .500 and there are a few teams that would love to be at this position. I just feel that Riccardi can only build a .500 club and he just can’t seem to make the next step. J.P. keeps saying it’s because of the injuries and the payroll. Now when the Red Sox and Yanks get injuries, they just trade or sign a player. Unfortunately, the Jays cannot, and they need to rely on prospects. So why not trade some veterans for some young guys? Riccardi needs to realize that we will never have the same payroll as them and we need to win the old fashion way.
Heart and determination.

Reasons why the Jays won’t make the playoffs
Here are some random reasons as to why the Blue Jays will not make the playoffs this year:
· David Eckstein is the DH against lefties
· Vernon Wells is on the DL (again)
· Your Number Three hitter (Alex Rios) has only 8 HR’s and 47 RBI’s
· Matt Stairs and Lyle Overbay are your clean up hitters
· A guy named ‘Joe Inglett’ is one of your top players
· You have two rookies and one ‘has been’ in your starting rotation
· They can’t hit with runners in scoring position
· The Jays are 16-22 in one run games
· Only three walk off wins this season
· Red Sox and Yankees are in their division
So enjoy the trade deadline this week and who knows, maybe they’ll prove me wrong.

Maybe this half will be better than the last……
Good morning, just a quick little blurb about our beloved Jays. Cito Gaston and the boys will kick off the second half against the Rays in Tampa. Now, Tampa had a tremendous first half, but near the end they were showing signs of coming back to reality. Burnett starts Friday, with the greatest pitcher of this century, Roy Halladay, pitching on Saturday. Jesse Litsch takes the reigns on Sunday and looks to bounce out of his little slump.
The Jays than travel to Baltimore and I assume that David Purcey will be recalled to start next Tuesday.
Let’s hope the second half is more exciting than the first. They are a better team than what there record shows.
