Rockin’ Romero?/Ignorant to Inglett
The battle for the final two starting spots is now over. Canadian Scotty Richmond & former 1st RDP Ricky Romero made the cut. Brad Mills (who was the final cut) lost out and has been sent to minor league camp. He will eventually end up in ‘AAA’. Likewise for Raul Chavez, who was battling Michael Barrett for the back up catchers spot.
It was nice to see Richmond make the starting five, given his story on how he made it to the ‘bigs’. Ricky Romero’s road is a little different. He is a former 1st RDP who struggled (mainly because of injuries) the past few years. Is he ready for the majors? Gaston & Riccardi think so. I for one am a little skeptical. As I have mentioned in previous blogs, I’m not a big fan of this guy. I think Romero made the team because of the lack of quality starters in the Jays system and will probably lose his spot once Janssen and/or McGowan come back. Time will tell.
But, perhaps he will prove me wrong.
In other Jays news, the versatile Joey Inglett was assigned to ‘AAA’. I am a little perplexed by this move, because I think he performed well last season in an utility role. I personally, would’ve had him on my team, no doubt. Now looking at the roster, you can almost understand why the Jays demoted him. The Jays have McDonald & Bautista on the bench. Johnny Mac can play SS, 2B & 3B. Jose Bautista can play third and second. The problem I have is that McDonald is not versatile enough. What I mean is that he is a whiz on defense, but he can’t hit. Inglett does alright on the field & he is a left handed hitter, who hits righties really well. Both can be used as pinch runners, but I personally would’ve gone with Inglett. Marco Scutaro(who is the starting short stop) can hold his own at that position. He also can play many positions. Nothing against McDonald, but I think Inglett would’ve been a better fit on this team.
This is almost déjà vu from last season. Anyone remember Reed Johnson?
Thanks for reading and bye for now.
