When September ends……
September is here and Riccardi and the Jays have finally surrendered the season. That’s okay, it was a good run. Toronto is currently nine games behind the Wild Card leading Boston Red Sox. However, they still have a chance to pass the Yankees and get third place in the always tough American League East.
This past weekend, Riccardi traded Matt Stairs and David Eckstein. These moves further solidifying that the season is finished. They traded Stairs to the Phillies for a player to be named later early Saturday. Yesterday, the Jays traded David Eckstein promptly after the game against the Yankees where he went 2-4, to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He traveled from New York to Arizona where he started at second base on Monday afternoon against the St. Louis Cardinals. Stephen Drew of the D’Backs hit for the cycle today against my Cardinals in an 8-6 win. David Eckstein went two for four with two runs batted in and a sacrifice fly. He was slotted number two in the batting order. I hope Arizona gives him the recognition that he deserves. I personally think (which I have mentioned in a previous blog) that he was black balled in Toronto by the media and the fans. Also, let’s not forget about Cito Gaston who left Eckstein on the bench to rust away. I’m glad that J.P. traded him to a playoff contender, because Eckstein does his best in October (2006 World Series MVP). The same can be said about Stairs. With Travis Snider being recalled and the playoffs a miracle or two away, Stairs was going to be left on the bench. So as I am sad to see both leave the Jays, I am happy too. As both players are top quality people, both on and off the field. Good Luck guys!
Speaking of call-ups, we will find out tomorrow who Riccardi will recall since the rosters are now expanded. I figure we might see former first round pick Ricky Romero. He was the guy who was drafted ahead of all-star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. Other players who could possibly be recalled are Shaun Marcum, Brian Wolfe, Scotty Richmond and Kevin Mench.
Now just because our beloved Jays are pretty much out of the pennant race, doesn’t mean you should stop watching baseball. There are plenty of races left. Let’s start in the National League East where there are three teams trying to win it. Currently the Mets are two games up on the Phillies and seven games ahead of Florida. Will the Mets fold like last September? We will see. The NL Central has the best team in baseball, the Chicago Cubs, leading the way. Milwaukee trails them by four and a half games. Than there is the NL West, where nobody seems to want the division. Arizona is the only team currently above .500 with the LA Dodgers and the surging Rockies hot on their heels.
Now let’s go to the American League. It looks like Tampa might hold on to the AL East (they currently have a 5.5 game lead over the Red Sox). The AL Central is still up for grabs. The race is between the White Sox and the Minnesota Twins with the Chisox leading by half a game! The Angels have the West locked up as the closest team (Texas) is 17 games behind.
The Wild Cards in both leagues are still up for grabs as well. The AL has Boston leading Minnesota by 2.5 and the Yankees by six and a half. The Milwaukee Brewers have the NL Wildcard by 5.5 games on the Phillies and 6.5 on my Cardinals.
Some questions that September will answer are:
Will Tampa do the impossible and win the AL East?
The New York Yankees don’t make the playoffs in their final season at Yankee stadium?
Will the Yappy Ozzie Guillen and his White Sox be held out of the playoffs while their cross town rivals the Cubs make it?
Can Canadian Superstar Justin Morneau lead the Twins past the Sox?
Can the Brewers hold off the Phillies/Mets (depending on who wins the NL East) and the Cardinals?
Will the Rockies have déjà vu and rocket past the D’Backs for the 2nd straight year?
Will the Mets have another September meltdown?
All these questions will make the final month an exciting one.
Stay tuned.
Thanks for reading and bye for now.
Did you know? That the Toronto Blue Jays have 12 complete games this season and are 7-5 in those games? That is the most complete game losses in a season by a team since the Oakland A’s in 2003 (6).
Reasons why the Jays won’t make the playoffs
Here are some random reasons as to why the Blue Jays will not make the playoffs this year:
· David Eckstein is the DH against lefties
· Vernon Wells is on the DL (again)
· Your Number Three hitter (Alex Rios) has only 8 HR’s and 47 RBI’s
· Matt Stairs and Lyle Overbay are your clean up hitters
· A guy named ‘Joe Inglett’ is one of your top players
· You have two rookies and one ‘has been’ in your starting rotation
· They can’t hit with runners in scoring position
· The Jays are 16-22 in one run games
· Only three walk off wins this season
· Red Sox and Yankees are in their division
So enjoy the trade deadline this week and who knows, maybe they’ll prove me wrong.

Ecstatic about Eckstein
With the MLB trade deadline coming up, there will be many rumours flying around the Rogers Centre. So far, Burnett and Eckstein are the ones being talked about. A.J. has an option left on his contract and most people figure he will walk. I tend to agree with them. Davie Eckstein on the other hand, is a free agent after this season and judging by how Cito Gaston has used him, I don’t think he will be back next year.
Apparently, Riccardi is looking to trade Burnett for a shortstop with some power. He is not happy with the production of Eckstein, the fan favourite, John McDonald and Marco Scutaro. Let’s not forget about Joe Inglett. Not happy? Eckstein is batting over .270 (I realize his average is not that great for a lead-off hitter), McDonald is the best in defense and Scutaro has been more than tolerable. Why does Riccardi think that he needs some power from this position? What about Left-Field? (I believe Adam Lind is over-rated, but that’s for another blog). How about consistency at DH. Does anyone really expect to win a division with Matt Stairs as your everyday DH? I think J.P. and the Jays would be better off looking for a hitter in the two above mentioned positions, than at SS. All season I have heard the commentators and fans complain about Eckstein. Is it because of his awkward stance or how he throws to first. Maybe it’s his all out hustle to first base. I’m not sure if they realize that he has won two WORLD SERIES and was the MVP in the 2006 World Series. I believe that Eckstein will get his average up to .290 if Gaston would keep him leading off. Gaston can substitute him with McDonald if the Jays are winning late in a game. And if Cito doesn’t want him to lead off, than why not put your shortstop in the ninth spot of the batting order? That’s why there’s a designated hitter, so you can place a lighter hitting/defensive player at the end of the lineup. This way J.P. could go find a slugger for the middle of the lineup. Perhaps Jason Bay?
If the Blue Jays come out stumbling after the All-Star Break, than I think they should dismantle the team. I’m not saying everybody, but why not Scott Rolen, Gregg Zaun, Matt Stairs, A.J. Burnett and B.J. Ryan. Just imagine what you could get for Ryan and Rolen. Heck, even Lyle Overbay. This way, we get some good prospects in return and if we want, trade them in the off-season for some veteran help. This is just a suggestion, I wouldn’t expect anyone to totally dismantle this team, but something has to be done. Nothing against Scott Rolen, he is one of my favourite players and I don’t want to see him go. But, if we could get something great in return, than why not.

Now I know it sounds like I have given up on the season, but you have to realize that we are currently 9 games out of a wild card spot, with seven teams ahead of us. It doesn’t look good. Sure, in the past couple of years Houston and Colorado have come out of nowhere in the second half to get into the playoffs. But we still lack ‘punch’ in the middle of the line-up.
Interesting Tidbit: The Jays are 12-21 in one run games. Imagine if it was reversed? That’s right, we would be tied for a wild card spot. Hmmmm.
Tomorrow the Jays are at home against the fourth place Orioles. Let’s see if we can climb past them with a sweep.
Thanks for reading and bye for now.
