The race to start loses one
Another candidate for the 4th or 5th spot in the starting rotation has fallen out of the race due to injury. The other day, Casey Janssen left after throwing 1/3 of an inning with tightness in his right (throwing) shoulder. That now leaves Clement, Scotty Richmond and a trio of prospects (R.Romero, Brett Cecil, and Brad Mills). Riccardi says that he does not want to rush his prospects, so therefore Cecil will probably be returned to AAA. Brad Mills and 2005 1RDP Ricky Romero now have an outside chance. Both Richmond & Clement will be pitching this weekend. Matt Clemet’s contract stipulates that he can be sent to the minors. This could be indeed valuable for the Jays if they decide to go with a rookie instead of Clement. If the rookie falters, at least they have someone with experience to fall back on.
The Jays are apparently in talks with Ontario native Shawn Hill, who was recently released by the Nationals. This is interesting, considering that Hill has been plagued by arm troubles the last few years. But hey, it’s worth a shot.
In other news, ‘China Doll’ Wells played centre field for the first time this spring yesterday. It looks like he might be ready for opening day. Travis Snider’s knee has healed & he should be in the lineup for Sunday’s game. Roy Halladay pitched five strong innings on Saturday, before giving up a slew of runs in the sixth. I don’t find it worrisome, as I’d rather see him do it in March, than in April.
Only 15 days until opening day at home against the Detroit Tigers. Let’s hope our starting five are good to go.
Thanks for reading and bye for now.
